Team GB Basketball Player, Rachael Vanderwal becomes an Official Ambassador of the WSA.

Hi! I’m Rachael Vanderwal, also known as Rach and the girl in the headband. I am a full time professional basketball player. I have been playing pro in Europe for the 14 seasons. I have represented Team GB in 113 games during the last 10 years. My biggest sporting achievements are competing in the London 2012 Olympics, 4 Eurobaskets and achieving a silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. I have always been a hard worker from childhood. Being born in Canada, no one in my family played basketball. We were an ice hockey family, and I actually figure skated (yes it’s hard to imagine me flying around the ice in a tutu I know) until the age of 11 when I gave it up for basketball. I fell in love with the game and have been self-motivated ever since. My goal as a child was to go to America on a full scholarship, and I absolutely loved those four years at Boston University. Then the goal became playing professionally and then it was to play in the Olympics, and after those both became true, I still wanted more. I am very grateful to be able to play the sport I love for a job. I am extremely passionate about basketball, and as I come closer to the end of my playing career, I want to help others achieve success and grow in any way I can. And being an ambassador for the WSA, I am able to do just that. I have seen from experience how important it is for female athletes to be supported and protected. And if I can play a small role in helping other athletes that will be great. I am super excited to be part of the WSA and I can’t wait get started!
